Another year, another listicle of things that I liked this year. Like every website exactly like us, and every website we rip off, here’s our arbitrary list of the best things. These are not limited to things we reviewed this year, so let’s get weird.
I’ve never been so blown away by a comic movie. Logan is so nuanced and well put together it sets a new bar for comic movies I don’t think will ever be beaten. It’s a gut wrenching tale of loss and death put on by fantastic cinematography and outstanding performances. This movie was the first thing to ever get a perfect 5 stars from us and it deserves every one of those.
Runner Up: Get Out
Best TV Show
There’s a common theme developing here. I like things that make me sad. For a show as goofy as Bojack Horseman should be, it packs the biggest emotional punch of anything you can find on Netflix. Wonderfully well written with great performances, it always finds new ways to make sure I’ll always hate myself.
Runner Up: Stranger Things
Best Wrestling PPV
NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11
It’s been both a good and terrible year for wrestling, mostly terrible in the WWE. However, NJPW has been a shining beacon of hope for wrestling fans. I don’t cover NJPW on the site, but that’s because I never watch it live. Japanese strong-style wrestling is always amazing to watch, and NJPW matches don’t get bogged down by the “WWE style”. There isn’t a bad match on the card, and it has the classic between Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega that is a legit contender for the best match ever.
Runner Up: NJPW Dominion 2017
Best Portable Game
Super Mario Odyssey
Technically doesn’t every Switch game count as portable? I suppose so, but for this category I’m picking Switch games that are particularly great to play on the go. Outside of being a contender for game of the year, Mario Odyssey is the perfect game to play on the go. With super simple gameplay, an endless amount of power moons to find, and without a massive strain on the battery, it’s the perfect game to take on the go.
Runner Up: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
It had to be Persona, didn’t it? The series is famous for its incredibly diverse and polished soundtracks, and Persona 5’s might just be the best yet. Shoji Meguro is an absolute genius, the soundtrack hits all the dizzying highs, terrifying lows, and creamy middles. This soundtrack is basically perfect. Couldn’t get it on vinyl though.
Runner Up: Sonic Mania
Metriod: Samus Returns
I don’t care what anyone says, this is a remake of Metroid 2: Return of Samus. While it’s essentially unrecognizable next to the original Gameboy game, Samus Returns does all the things you’d expect of a 2D Metroid in 2017. Is it as good as Super Metroid? No. Is it the best 3DS game this year? Yeah, probably.
Runner Up: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
TLoZ Ocarina of Time 3D by Benstephens56 @ AGDQ 2017
A new category, I spent a lot of time this year watching speedruns, and off of the record-breaking year GDQ had, it only makes sense. Ben’s run at AGDQ is year is tremendous. A fantastic run done by a talent and charismatic runner, it’s a wonderful way to spend 2 hours.
Runner Up: Super Mario Sunshine Race @ AGDQ 2017
Game of the Year
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
It had to be this didn’t it? It may be predictable, but Breath of the Wild is the best game this year, and maybe the best Zelda game ever. This game is the sheer embodiment of the spirit of the franchise. It’s an absolute technical and artistic marvel. It’s a masterpiece. Now this edged out Mario Odyssey, but they’re both so tremendous I can see the argument for Odyssey being game of the year as well. Check out the Breath of the Wild review to see me gush about it more.
Runner Up: Super Mario Odyssey
Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus
And that’s the year. It’s been fun. There was lots of great stuff this year, and plenty of great things to look forward to next year. Let us know what your picks are, and stay tuned for our Worst of the Year awards next week!
